Given the market share Android currently enjoys, there are a plethora of tools available in the market which can help a person recover their last data from their smartphone. iStonsoft Data Recovery for Android aims to do the same, and comes with a trial version. We decided to give the trial a try to see if iStonsoft Data Recovery for Android is any good for what it promises to do.
The installer is pretty lightweight at less than 4 MB in size. Installation was a breeze on my Windows 8 desktop. The splash screen on the app gives you slight instructions on how to get started by connecting the phone to your PC. The first step in establishing the connection is to enable USB debugging on your Android device. On Gingerbread and below, this option is available in Settings > Applications > Development and ticking the checkbox against the USB Debugging option. On Android 4.0 and above, the option to do so is present under Settings > Developer Options.
Once you enable USB Debugging, connect your phone to your computer using a usb cable, and hit the refresh button in the trial version of the iStonsoft Data Recovery software. If drivers have been installed correctly, your phone should now appear in the software. When your phone shows up, you can scan its storage for any deleted files, photos, videos, preview them to see whether they are restorable, and finally restore the one you need.
The software can recover deleted text messages from Android phone. It can also recover contacts from Android phone, but both these features (the text messages and contacts, that is) only if you have a rooted Android device. All other features work perfectly fine on non-rooted devices.
iStonsoft Data Recovery was able to restore most of the recently deleted items from my phone - the Yu Yureka. This software should work on other Android phones as well, and the official page mentions Samsung, Sony, HTC, and then some.
So, if you ever end up deleting something important on your Android smartphone and must get it back, giving iStonsoft Data Recovery for Android a try won't hurt at all.
