Mediatek is powering the recently launched Android One handsets, and we, like many others, were thus skeptical about whether Mediatek will continue with its notorious ritual of keeping the Kernel source code to itself. Looks like partnering with Google on the Android One project has changed a thing or two as the kernel source code for the first wave of the Android One smartphones has been released by Google.
The kernel source is the same for all the three devices - namely Micromax Canvas A1, Spice Dream Uno and Karbonn Sparkle V. All these phones pack the exact same hardware, and only differ in their branding (and a few subtle design differences), and thus same kernel source code for these device does make sense.
The release of the kernel source is expected to be welcomed by Indian developers, who will hopefully dish out some delicious custom kernels for these devices. As for the AOSP based custom roms, we shall have to still wait for the release of platform source.
In related news, XDA has already created dedicated sub-forums for all the three devices. And Micromax has supposedly run out of stock due to "overwhelming" response to its Android One iteration i.e. Canvas A1. This doesn't seem to be the case with Spice Dream Uno and Karbonn Sparkle V though.

Today we pushed the kernel source for the Android One device family. The kernel source can be found on the android-msm-sprout-3.4-kitkat-mr2 branch in the kernel/msm project. It’s also tagged with ‘android-4.4.4_r3′. - Bill Yi
