Bech De: OLX for Android makes selling used things a breeze

Naspers backed Olx.in is the largest player in the online classifieds market in India. Its brand awareness is said to be 4 times that of its nearest competitor in India, i.e. Quickr. Everyone would expect such a market leader to have a brilliant mobile app and so we decided to try out the OLX app for mobile.

Olx for Android is a pretty lightweight app and can be installed on any device running on the ancient Android 2.1 up till the latest Android 4.4 KitKat. Low end Android devices are a norm in India and thus, it is a nice thinking from the app developers. Once you select your location, selling or browsing through classifieds is very simple.

To sell anything, press the sell button on the top right corner of the app. Then optionally add a picture of the item you want to sell by using your phone's camera. Now all you need to do is describe the item you are listing, the price you want to sell it for. That's it, you can now post your ad.

If we compare the Olx app with the main website, it can help at times when you feel too lazy to power on your computer, shoot the picture with your phone or a camera, transfer it to your pc and then post the ad. Also, surfing through the listed classifieds is a better experience on the application then on the website.

Some stats revealed by Olx last year revealed that used stuff like mobiles, computers, electronics, furniture and vehicles constitute about 70% of the total ads generated on Olx. So, if you have any such item you are willing to sell, you have good chances of finding a seller, given the popularity of these ads on Olx.

Olx already receives majority of its traffic from mobile, therefore it understands the importance of a good smartphone app. Plus, the number of smartphones and internet subscribers is going nowhere but up, in India. So, Olx is taking the right steps by trying to tap this potential user base.

Olx scores full marks for being lightweight, supporting Android devices and for running nicely even on slow 2G networks, a common bottleneck in using apps that require frequent internet access in India. The app is totally free and has no questionable permissions requested. So, giving it a try won't harm you in any way.
